On Sunday July 9th, volunteers Mingyao Xu, Angeline Li, and Christopher Zhu partnered with the organization Audubon New York to collect signatures to protect endangered birds such as the Least Terns and Piping Plovers.
After setting up our station at Sunken Meadow Beach, with representatives from Audubon, we walked around the boardwalk to collect signatures while other volunteers stayed at the station to converse with people who came up to the table. Despite the reports of storms in the area, many people still showed up to the beach and the Roslyn branch accumulated approximately 200 signatures today. Additionally, we informed people about a bird walk, where people follow instructors to view gulls, terns, and plovers if they are still present. It’s important for us to maintain a positive manner and attitude, no matter the reaction people have towards the signing of this pledge. Ultimately, through this experience, we learned to respect the decisions of others and the importance of protecting these birds.
