On June 3, 2023, AYLUS Great Neck Branch volunteered at the Bethpage Maintenance Garden. Invasive plants pose a significant threat to the natural environment as they outcompete native plants and disrupt the ecological balance. Today we learned to identify and remove these intruders, focusing primarily on mugwort, honeysuckle, and Artemisia vulgaris. Equipped with gardening tools, we carefully uprooted these invasive species, ensuring the complete removal of their root systems to prevent regrowth. A particular emphasis was placed on preserving the native Sweet Pepper Bush, a vibrant summer plant that adds beauty and biodiversity to the garden.
As we worked, we encountered the challenges posed by honeysuckle, which had strangled surrounding plants. We had to unraveled the honeysuckle, freeing the oppressed plants from its grip while minimizing any potential damage. To prevent the spread of invasive plants, we collected the uprooted mugwort and honeysuckle, and arranged for their transfer to another park where they would be composted appropriately. By disposing of these invasive species responsibly, we minimized the risk of reintroduction and further damage to the Bethpage Maintenance Garden.
The volunteer event at the Bethpage Maintenance Garden was a resounding success, and we remain dedicated to continuing our efforts in combatting invasive species and promoting a harmonious environment for all.
