On Saturday from 12:00-2:30, the Roslyn Branch volunteered at the Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve.
The Baltimore Checkerspots are a rare species of butterfly found in the New York region, so rare that the Caumsett Park contained the only breeding grounds for those butterflies on Long Island. After learning about their breeding patterns and life cycle, the volunteers strung up fences around their breeding grounds to prevent people and animals from stepping on or crushing the butterfly eggs and larvas.
We also removed invasive vines and bush-like plants that are creeping in from the edge of the property. Different tools was used for different thickness and angle of the stems and branches. Some of the branches had thorns on it so we had to be careful and wear thick gloves. Many of the vines were tangled so even if we cut the roots, it’s still hard to remove so teamwork was vital.
