Turkey has had a series of terrible earthquakes that severely damaged numerous communities. The earthquakes have impacted a large number of people, who are in need of daily necessities. In response to this tragedy, AYLUS Dix Hills has taken initiative to gather donations to aid them in their time of need. To get the greatest amount of donations, the community involved, AYLUS Dix Hills reached out to various other AYLUS Basking Ridge, Bridgewater, Edison, Manhasset, and Syosset, as well as the Long Island Chinese School to gather more donations  gather various donations of goods; items like blankets, tents, sleeping bags, pocket warmers, cold clothes, and pharmaceuticals.

Because all of the materials that were donated weren’t organized based on packaging or types of items, not only would it be difficult to load on the truck but also organize items specific to the needs of each person for Turkey. Members took action to organize all of the materials through packaging, and the we organized all the materials into five separate piles, clothes, shoes, blankets, tents, and toiletries, then packaged them.

Many of the packaging materials for these donations are often used in plastic bags that were flimsy and could be easily ripped. Furthermore, many of the clothes inside of the bags were unfolded, messy, or lacked sufficient quality. A kind donation of more than 100 cardboard boxes from a JFK supplier allowed our large group of volunteers to properly package all of the Turkey Earthquake Relief Donations into 34 sturdy boxes. This allowed all the volunteers to separate the clothes based on season, age, and damaged or unusable, as well as to fold them for cardboard boxes.

These supplies will ease the suffering and challenges of numerous people who have been injured or displaced as a result of the earthquakes in Turkey. AYLUS will keep helping Turkey and other communities in their hour of need in the hopes of lessening the impact of such a tragedy.
