Great Neck Branch volunteers at Caumsett State Park for the third time on 2/25/2023(statepark 3)

On February 25th, 2023, the Great Neck Branch eliminate invasive species and preserve the garden at Caumsett State Park from 9:30-12:30 on a Saturday morning.

The invasive plants that we targeted were Rosa multiflora, honeysuckle, and porcelain berry. These plants are notorious for taking over gardens and damaging trees. As they move up the trees, they become heavier and may cause them to break. The invasive plants not only choke or strangle the trees, but they also invite disease and insects, which can cause the healthy forest to be taken over by the invasive plants.

During the event, we were educated by George, the Environmental Stewardship Assistant. He enlightened us on the importance of our efforts to eliminate invasive plants. If we didn’t take action, the invasive plants would continue to spread and take over the entire grassland, ultimately threatening the habitat and the checker spots.

Despite the harsh weather conditions, including snowfall, we remained committed to our mission. Our work was not just about removing invasive plants, but also protecting the environment and promoting a healthy grassland ecosystem. It was an honor to be part of this initiative.

Members Participated (3h): Fanxi Xia, Zoe Xia.
