Greater Princeton AYLUS Promotes Youth Volunteerism with Chess Tournaments & Classes (88th) in November 2022

In November, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) Sports Committee continued its tournament fundraiser along with weekly chess classes at the West Windsor Public Library.

GPA Sports Committee has resumed in person chess classes at the West Windsor Branch Library. Every Tuesday from 5:15 to 6:15 pm, GPA holds a beginner class open to everyone in the activity room at the library. This week, it was the first class and we introduced ourselves, and taught how to set up the chess board with a creative story as well as the point value of the pieces. Everyone had a great time learning how to set up a chess board and competing with other students. With more people joining the ABC Chess Club, even more kids have the opportunity to play quality chess against other curious learners.

On November 5th, 2022, the Chess Club hosted its twenty eighth tournament fundraiser. With more people joining the club, even more kids have the opportunity to play quality chess against other curious learners.

With the tournament starting, over 125 people joined the club to compete in this week’s tournament. Before the tournament started, there was an informational meeting held on zoom to discuss the rules about the tournament and to introduce AYLUS to the participants that are not familiar with the organization, along with mentioning how to donate to help the community.

The tournament started at 7:00 PM EST with many participants, in an 1 hour swiss style tournament with 3 rounds. Many intense games were played with many close games. When the tournament concluded, “handldk” (3/3 wins, 0 loss, 0 draw) got first place followed by second “Wunwun45” with (2/3 games) and “mituno” in third with (2/3 games). Everyone had fun during this tournament and got the chance to play against a variety of different opponents with different skill levels.

GPA Chess Club’s next tournament will be our annual Holiday Classic tournament with CASH PRIZES, most likely hosted on Saturday, December 3rd, starting at 7PM EST. The time control will remain the same (G15+5) and everyone is welcome. All ages can come and compete with their skills and have fun playing games of chess.

GPA Volunteers: Sarah Yan (11/5  2 hrs + Tournament flyer & report 2 hrs), Erick Yan (11/5, 2 hrs), and more.
