On June 7th AYLUS from 9:00 to 11:00am volunteers headed to the Green Acre Garden at Bethpage Park to pull out weeds. The volunteers were given instructions in what areas to weed, and were given gloves to protect their hands.
This week the group was primarily weeding out mugwort, an invasive plant located in North America that disrupts the ecosystem of native species. For around an hour and a half volunteers cleared out the left portion of the garden. Volunteers also brought raincoats as they needed to work through a light drizzle. A cluster of spotted lantern flies was detected and identified by a volunteer who helped get rid of them via a vacuum. Rounding the work off, volunteers were sent to the back to rip out different sorts of invasive vines and plants which were covering and depleting the trees of their resources.
Thanks to the work of AYLUS volunteers they were able to make the garden a more enjoyable space to visitors, along with clearing the path for future greenery to be planted.
