On Sunday 1, June, Aylus volunteers participated with others at Caumsett State Historic park preserve during 9:30 to 12:00am.
First, the Aylus volunteers gathered at the main parking lot, and the volunteer coordinator passed out gloves and other tools for volunteers to use. The job volunteers need to do today was to clear out all mugwort possible. Mugworts are invasive plants that affect native ecosystems. Volunteers tried their best to pull out all roots of the mugworts, gathered them, and put them into huge fabric bags. The bags were finally transported away by a car. The mugworts blended in with many good native plants, like sunflowers, goldenrods, new England aster, milkweed, fox glove beard tongue, dropseed etc. so volunteers need to be careful to minimize the pull out of good plants. In the end, the volunteers and the volunteer coordinators have collected about 367 pounds of mugworts.
The Caumsett State Historic park preserve has other programs helping the environment like the butterfly garden. It’s an area planted with plants and flowers that the monarch butterfly likes and live in. The park also has many wild animals living in, which include but are not limited to birds, squirrels, rabbits, and deer. It’s a nice place to hang out and to relax, and what the volunteers did today are worthy and memorable.
Members who participated include: Felicia Liu (2.5h), Yingxiang Liu (2.5h), Yuya Liu (2.5h)
