On Saturday, May 31st, 2025, from 9:00AM to 12:00PM, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at NOSH Delivers. NOSH Delivers is a food pantry in Glen Cove that strives to make sure families in need have access to food. When we entered the food pantry, we immediately saw the newly stocked shelves with many rows and columns of food such as orange juice, peanut butter and canned tuna, because of a recent delivery. Some of our volunteers began pantry guiding or assisting in the farmers market bagging groceries and displaying our new donations of fresh bread and pastries.
Once we took a quick tour around the building, we immediately started working. Since one of the most important regulations of a food pantry is cleanliness and organization, we began organizing frozen red meat such as chuck roast and ground beef. We transported the meat into freezers closer to the customers so they could choose which source of protein would fit their families dietary needs. The access to frozen meat is important for the less fortunate because of how long it is able to go without spoiling and the availability of the amount of meat they are able to choose from. After we finished organizing the the frozen meat, we began decorating the “KFIP” bags. The “KFIP” or Kid Food Independence Program is a program through NOSH which provides kids with decorated breakfast and
lunch bags. Because school is ending, we have began making more as some kids are not able to access the free lunch meals that some schools serve. The station for decorating bags wasn’t tidy so we cleaned up the area by rolling rolls of stickers, and organizing markers by color. Keeping the food pantry neat and tidy is important everywhere, even in miniscule areas of the building.
At the end of the day, Lots of bread and pastries were left over as alot was donated over the past few days. The volunteers and some of the last customers were able to take as many baked goods as they wanted because if nobody took them, they would have to throw it out. The accessibility to fresh food or food in general should not be taken for granted and today has taught me to be grateful for everything I am given in life.
