On May 1st, 2025, from 2:45 PM to 3:45 PM, members of AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch volunteered at Public School 203 the Oakland Gardens School. This was the 147th event that our branch hosted. We collected books obtained through a collaboration with the school, in support of the African Library Project.
The African Library Project is an annual project that AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch participates in. This year, 2025, is their second year. AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch has to collect from donations over 1,200 books a year to be able to ship these books to Africa to build a library. We believe that it is important that people all over the globe, especially in the more underprivileged areas, to receive the gift of reading and education. As people living in an advanced society, it is crucial that we share what we have with people with less.
Not only is it our second year participating in the African Library Project, but it is also our second year collaborating with Public School 203 to help achieve our goal. They made every grade at their school aware of the ongoing book drive, and kids from pre-k all the way to fifth grade supported our branch in reaching our goal. Whenever they received lots of donations, they would call our branch to pick the books up.
Our members started the event afterschool. They persevered and worked hard even after a long day at school. This event went on for an hour, showing their determination to complete a goal. This just goes on to prove the compassion of our members and their care for the community.
We are so thankful for the support from all our members, and most importantly, P.S. 203. It would be impossible for us to reach our goal of at least 1,200 books without them. Thank you everyone for your support.
