On January 11th, the Syosset AYLUS organization attended the Long Island Native Plant Initiative to volunteer. Today, we had many volunteers at the greenhouse to assist. The Long Island Native Plant Association asked us to focus on sifting out seeds from the plants. We used various tools to help with this task, including a grater and a wooden tool that allowed us to apply pressure to press the plant onto the grater to extract the seeds. There was also another section where the seeds were manually picked out for greater precision. All of the seeds that were collected were placed in a can where they could be sifted further to ensure that only the seeds remained, and excess materials such as leaves, sticks, etc., were removed. In addition to helping out at the greenhouse, we also helped with the cleanup afterwards, as there was a large crowd at the greenhouse that day. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS organization was very successful in assisting at the greenhouse and in sifting out seeds from the plants.
