Program Background: The Healthy Living Style Youth Advocacy program is a venture supported by the Prevention Institution and operated by the Light and Salt Association. Its primary objective is to advocate for healthy living among youth. Recognizing the importance of youth involvement, AYLUS Pearland volunteers were invited to contribute their expertise in program design, evaluation, and execution. In its second year, the program underwent modifications based on valuable feedback received from the previous year’s volunteers. As a result, the program expanded to a week-long intensive initiative, and college students were invited to lead the youth participants.
Day 3 activities:
The morning session of the third day commenced with a brief introduction by two knowledgeable dietitian students, Madison Brack and Kayley Neill, on the distinction between macro and micronutrients. Following this, the volunteers were divided into groups and assigned specific fruits. Working collaboratively, they embarked on creating visually captivating and persuasive poster boards, designed to inspire readers to incorporate the assigned fruits into their daily diets. These eye-catching visuals aimed to promote the importance of a well-balanced and nutritious lifestyle. The volunteers’ work will be hanging on the wall of LSA’s charity clinic.
In the afternoon session, the focus shifted towards raising awareness about Hepatitis C and B.
Volunteers gathered comprehensive information online on the impact of these diseases. Drawing from their findings, they composed informative manuscripts intended to educate the community and encourage individuals to undergo testing. The manuscripts will be utilized at future health fairs to provide valuable insights and promote the importance of early detection.
Furthermore, the dedicated volunteers took the initiative to conduct testing on each other for Hepatitis C. They also helped the nurses at the clinic on hepatitis C testing.
