On June 7, 2023, the dedicated volunteers from AYLUS Pearland enthusiastically contributed their time and efforts to support the Light and Salt Association’s SMILE summer program. Their presence greatly enhanced the experience for the SMILE students, as they actively engaged in a variety of enriching activities.
During the first half of the day, our devoted volunteers collaborated closely with the students, guiding them through captivating arts and crafts projects that encouraged self-expression and fostered their creative abilities. Among the creative endeavors, the students had the opportunity to fashion intricate bead pictures and construct vibrant flowers using construction paper and pipe cleaners. Emma Lu, one of our volunteers, skillfully instructed the students on the art of crafting these beautiful flowers.
Following the arts and crafts session, the students had some spare time before transitioning to the next activity. They enthusiastically participated in a stimulating memorization exercise. A series of captivating icons were presented in a well-arranged two by five grid, and after a brief period, the icons were concealed. Subsequently, one of the ten images was revealed, prompting the students to recall its exact position within the grid—an engaging challenge that tested their memory skills.
Concluding the day’s events, the students immersed themselves in their weekly Spanish lesson, where they eagerly absorbed new vocabulary and practiced utilizing their newfound words in sentences. The session culminated with the assignment of homework, enabling the students to reinforce their language acquisition outside the classroom.
The unwavering commitment and support provided by the AYLUS Pearland volunteers truly made a remarkable impact on the SMILE summer program. Their dedication and enthusiasm created a positive and inspiring environment, nurturing the students’ growth and encouraging their educational journey.
