Dix Hills Branch works with SUNY Old Westbury to bring the greatest learning experience to children on April 2, 2023

The SUNY Old Westbury and the AYLUS Dix Hills Branch collaborate to give kids the best possible education. As teacher assistants, the AYLUS Dix Hills volunteers assisted students who were having difficulty understanding the lesson, ensured that everyone was on task and watched over the students during recess. However, most classes which consist of older students didn’t require volunteers in their classroom. Due to the young age of certain students in classes, some teachers require extra aid to manage the kids. Through this, younger students were able to get the help they needed, in comparison to those of older classes that are able to stay focused and understand lessons better. Volunteers helped to set up the powerpoint presentation on smartboards to access Chinese learning materials, in which they had students repeat pin-yin characters on the board. Additionally, volunteers assisted the teachers in grading homework to maximize the time being used to learn in the classroom. Overall, by doing so, volunteers were able to ensure the full learning experience of Chinese in the classrooms. Later in the evening, volunteers helped the Japanese classes.

Volunteers: Sara Kong (3 hours and 30 minutes), Ru Xue Jiang (3 hours), Lilian Chen (2 hours), and Ming Chen (3 hours).
