On March 17th, 2023, fifteen members of the AYLUS Mainline branch went to Zummo Bike in Berwyn, to help decorate store windows for the upcoming spring. Zummo Bike is a hometown nonprofit that collects, fixes, rents, sells, and donates refurbished bikes to low-income communities in need of cheap modes of transportation. By distributing these bikes, sometimes without cost, the shop promotes environmental sustainability, benefiting beyond our local community.
Five total tasks were divided among the volunteers: Melissa, Emily, Mindy, Manya, Elina, Sarah, Steven, Derek, Sean, and Yubo painted the three big windows and side door, Olivia and Sophia painted the front door. Joe, Ryan Y., and Ryan Z. helped with welding bike parts from used metal. Ryan Y., Ryan Z., Emily, Melissa also painted six store signs to promote the small business.
The volunteers were very creative with their display ideas: each window was painted with a spring theme and bright pastel colors to attract passing customers. One window depicted a blue bike with flowers in its basket to promote the bike shop, while the other windows focused more on decorating, painting flowers, trees, hot air balloons, bunnies, butterflies, etc. The retail store signs advertised bike rentals and bike cleaning, as well as selling bike parts such as bike bells, baskets, and more. The sign will be placed outside on the road to advertise while onlookers dry or pass by.
