On Sunday from 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm, the Roslyn AYLUS branch helped out at a school of Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island.
During language class, AYLUS volunteers played an active role in assisting the teacher with various tasks. One of our primary responsibilities was to distribute learning materials such as textbooks, worksheets, and other resources to our fellow classmates. Volunteers took special care to ensure that students who were absent or fell behind in class were provided with the necessary materials to catch up with the rest of the class.
Moreover, volunteers also helped our language teacher to resolve some technical issues with the smartboard in the classroom. Fixing the problems makes the class more interesting and efficient.
In our art class, students explored different forms of art and creative expression. They listened to traditional music and tried their hand at traditional writing styles. The teacher encouraged students to delve into the history and cultural significance of the art forms they were exploring. Students learned about the evolution of different Chinese characters and writing techniques over time and how they were influenced by social, political, and economic factors.
Furthermore, students were given the freedom to express themselves creatively. The teacher also organized a competition where she selected the best work from each student and showcased them to all the parents the next week. This not only boosted students’ confidence but also helped them to develop their artistic skills and appreciation for different forms of art and art.
