On February 1st, 2023, six members of the AYLUS Rancho Cucamonga branch participated in the Teen Advisory Group meeting at the Paul A. Biana public library online for 2 hours. This was the first time that AYLUS had participated in a volunteer program at the community library.
The meeting aimed to introduce the city’s volunteers and provide basic information about the volunteer program. The meeting was organized by representatives of the library and other volunteering coordinators. During the meeting, AYLUS members introduced themselves and other volunteers who were also interested in helping the community, most of whom were high school students. Icebreakers were played to get to know each other better, which would be important for future volunteering events. They also discussed volunteering plans, in which they secured volunteering opportunities at the local library and retirement homes.
Recently, the AYLUS volunteer program participated in an online meeting with over 20 diverse people from different grades and schools. Despite the virtual format, the volunteers were able to find common ground, discuss their hobbies, books, and opinions on events. Victory Garden, an activity center at the library, provided a space for the volunteers to share their opinions and make suggestions for upcoming library activities. This experience allowed the volunteers to not only make new friends but also enrich themselves by developing their communication and leadership skills.
Overall, the meeting was a significant step in introducing AYLUS to the community and reaching out to more places to offer help. Not only did they meet some of their fellow volunteers, but they also had a good experience during the meeting, knowing that AYLUS is one step closer to reaching its full potential. The Teen Advisory Group and the AYLUS volunteer program offer an excellent opportunity for young people to get involved in their community, collaborate with others, and make a positive impact.
