The past week, members of the AYLUS Chapel Hill branch made donations to Families Moving Forward, an organization local to Durham which works to end homelessness in the area. In order to do this, they provide temporary shelter, living services, and skills education to those in need. They are the largest provider of such resources in Durham, serving up to 85 families per year and up to 200 children per year in their emergency shelter program. In the end, they hope that everyone going through the program may leave with a stable, self-sufficient, and safe home as well as a means to maintain that home into the future.
As a branch, we contributed to this effort by donating common household decorations and aesthetic items— objects which are vital to making a home provided by FMF truly feel warm, personal, and welcoming. Combined, the participating members collected, cleaned, and donated pillows, decorative rugs, and art pieces for the walls. We are grateful to be able to work with an organization like FMF to address a pressing, local issue like homelessness, and look forward to continuing to make donations in the future.
Volunteers who participated in this event are Ethan Li_DA (1.5 hours), Nicholas Wang (1 hour), and Andy Sun (1 hour).
