On Sunday from 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm, the Roslyn AYLUS branch helped out at a school of Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island.
This is the Lantern Festival in China, and volunteers are assigned to classes of different grades and accompany them to experience cultural traditions. By guessing riddles, students can learn about the culture of their hometown and experience different festivals. Students use the knowledge they have learned before in school to get red envelopes or food rewards for answering the questions correctly. Later, we help the teacher rehearse the upcoming performance next week and help the teacher design the formation. In the art class, the teacher led the students to understand ancient Chinese history and have a deeper understanding of the Lantern Festival. Students learn about the first emperor of China and how he ruled neighboring countries, and how he unified various details of life, such as weights and measures, currency, and more. Volunteers help teachers clean the classrooms and arrange tables and chairs so that the school can return to its original state. Finally, to thank the volunteers’ long-turn hard work, all were given an orange and an apple, which respectively represent peace and prosperity in Chinese.
