On Saturday from 9:00 am -12:00 pm, the Roslyn Branch helped out at the cleanup at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum.
Yellow Flag Iris and English Ivy are the two invasive species that’s stealing the nutrients of native plants and damaging their growth. They also grow at an alarming speed and completely takes over the land. We learned about the difference between English Ivy and Poison Ivy. Half of us yanked the ivies off trees and pulled them from the ground. The other half of us worked to remove yellow flagged iris from the ground. The iris has long tangling roots that intermingled underground, making the task extremely difficult. We planted shovels in the ground and stomped on it to stab it into the tough dirt ground. Teamwork is a requirement and four of us have to dig into the chunk of earth while another two of us untangled the roots with our hands. The work is physically exhausting but with enough encouragement, we managed.
