On the morning of November 5th, volunteers tutored elementary kids at Ed White Elementary school from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. Tutors were divided into three groups. One for multiplication and division (in charge of fourth graders) and another one in charge of fifth graders. Most tutors were assigned with two students.
In the multiplication station, tutors had to cover how to multiply using area models and regular algorithm. They were handed sheets for simple multiplication, a multiplication table, and a guideline for the two methods to use to teach students. In the division table, the tutors had to cover simplifying fractions, long division, and simple single-digit division. This included teaching the greatest common factor to fourth graders. There were multiple practice sheets. The fifth grade tutors were in charge of monitoring kids and sometimes grading. Fourth graders were supposed to rotate stations at 10:30 a.m. from multiplication to division, but that did not happen. However, this gave them an opportunity to receive specific tutoring on one operation to make sure they fully understood it.
At the event on November 5th (total of 4 hours, including 3 hours of tutoring and 1 hour of commute), members that attended were: Eric Li, Dylan Wang, Betty Feng, Bob Feng, Ellen Dai
