On October 29, 2022, Columbus branch members volunteered in a local community garden, named the UALC community garden, located in Hilliard, Ohio. The garden project began more than 10 years ago and currently produces around 10,000 pounds of fresh produce annually. Most of the fresh, organic produce is made available to area families living in poverty at no cost and the rest is donated to the mid-Ohio Food bank, which serves 17 central Ohio counties. Our branch connected with them through a recent event organized by the Dublin Food Pantry.
Even though the weather is getting cooler in central Ohio, the garden still has vegetables in growth, such as white and red radish. In addition, in order to prepare for a new growing season next year, on 29th, the garden organized an event to spread compost in the garden. Columbus members and their parents participated in this event with other adult or teenager volunteers in the community. They transported compost with one-wheel barrows and use their own tools to spread them onto the vegetable beds in the big garden.
This effort laid great groundwork for good crops next year, base on their previous experience that the compost could increase their production for nearly 30%! AYLUS-Columbus is excited to be part of it.
