AYLUS Bellaire Branch received a donation of 48 cases of alcohol-based hand sanitizers during the month of July 2022. The AYLUS Bellaire members then donated these sanitizers to the local community and held a sanitizer fundraiser benefitting the Houston Youth Leaders Alliance.
On July 21 and July 22, volunteers Jason Chen and Elaine Qin picked up the 48 cases of hand sanitizers from the warehouse and transported them to an easily accessible storage location. On July 30, volunteers Eric Li, Isabel Li, Alexander Tang, and Helena Wang helped to donate six cases of the hand sanitizers to the Divine Grace Medical Missionaries, which then distributed the sanitizers to the families in need. Volunteers also donated the rest of the sanitizers to local community including various education centers and art, dancing, or martial arts schools. In addition, volunteers held a fundraiser benefitting the Houston Youth Leaders Alliance, giving away sanitizers to the fundraiser donors. The AYLUS Bellaire raised $320 donation from this event.
In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, alcohol-based hand sanitizers have been increasingly used to fight the germs. To be most effective, the sanitizers need contain at least 60% alcohol. If alcohol concentration drops below 60% due to evaporation or extended storage, the effectiveness of the sanitizer to kill germs will be decreased. Washing hands with soap and water is still the best way to avoid getting sick and prevent the spread of infections. However, when water and soap are not available, use of hand sanitizers is the important alternative. Interestingly, hand sanitizers have many uses other than cleaning hands. They can be used to disinfect phone screens, eyeglasses, mirrors, and various types of surfaces. These sanitizers donated by the AYLUS Bellaire will likely help the local community to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
