On September 17th, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) worked a lot to put together a demonstration at the Turtle Back Zoo. They did preparation, presentation, teaching and sharing. There was a lot of positive feedback from participants and zoo staff members.
GPA members showed how to make snow skin mooncake at the Turtle Back Zoo to raise funds for the 5th annual youth benefit concert and to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. The Turtle Back Zoo hosted the annual “Amazing Asia Celebration” where Asian cultures showcased through food, art, dragon dance and jewelry. We prepared the mooncake wrapper and fillings separately.
They made the mooncake fillings with lotus-seed and red-bean. We cooked them in batches and then separated out into individual servings. We colored some wrappers green and pink. Wrappers and fillings weighed to 25g each and shaped into rounded balls to be assembled at the event. We set up our vendor stand at 4pm with AYLUS banners and concert information. We started with wrapping a filling into the wrapper and then molding them into a mooncake. People were interested to learn the making process and the story behind the festival.
Guests enjoyed the mooncakes that we made and many also were happy to make the mooncakes themselves. Some people told us that this was their first time trying mooncakes. Some came back for more, and the word quickly spread about our stand. We successfully showed mooncake making and received genuine donations from guests. It was a great Asian Celebration night.
GPA members Xing Liao (9/17, 2 hr) and Tian Liao (9/17, 2 hrs) prepared the food, plus packing and loading. Xing Liao (9/17, 5 hrs), Laetitia Huang (9/17, 5 hrs), and Meichun Pan (9/17, 5 hrs) were there from 4-9 pm.
