On July 3rd from 4:00 pm-8:00 pm, three Aylus volunteers assisted the Light and Salt Association with providing free Hepatitis C (HCV) screening to the public. In preparation for this day, the volunteers attended eight, 6-hour on-site trainings held by the Light and Salts’ Healthy Living Program as well as earned their certifications to give HCV tests. The first couple of screenings were tough as volunteers adjusted to the environment and learned how to interact with their patients in a gentle, professional manner. In addition, many of the patients were native Spanish speakers so the volunteers interacted with patients in Spanish as needed. The volunteers soon became acclimated with the tests and with the combined efforts of staff from the Light and Salt Association, helped screen over 100 patients.
