In July 2022, the Greater Princeton branch of AYLUS started a volunteer program with local Animal Shelter (Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, 194 West Route 10, East Hanover, NJ 07936, https://njshelter.org/), and helped to find loving homes for dogs, cats, small animals, reptiles, amphibians, and/or fish.
The Animal Shelter is a wonderful place dedicated to providing medical care, animal fostering and adoption opportunities, and training services to dogs and cats that have dealt with unfortunate circumstances in NJ.
GPA members, including Laetitia Huang (7/29, 2 hrs; 7/30, 4 hrs), Catherine You (8/3, 1 hr), Melanie You (8/3, 1 hr), and Annie Wang (8/3, 1 hr), attended the shelter’s orientation and learned about the safety protocols, volunteer requirements, scheduling and rules. There are lots of activities that volunteers can take part in, such as walking, feeding, watering and socializing with the animals according to handling guidelines.
Here are some activities that volunteers take part in:
Walk and socialize animals under handling guidelines and based on scheduled hours; Feed animals; Change water; Give treats, toys and blankets in kennels; Clean kennels and office areas; Organize supplies; Clean debris and feces from all indoor and outdoor areas; Screen applications for foster and adoption; Assist with Meet & Greets.
In August, GPA volunteers including Karen Yao (8/6, 2 hrs) went to forgotten cats adoption center in Petsmart Glen Mills PA and did 2 hours volunteer work. At the cats center, Karen Yao and Jason Jia took the cats out of their enclosures and cleaned their bedding, litter bins, and dusted the area. They played with the cats and filled out observation forms for the cats.
