On Saturday, April 9th, AYLUS Pearland volunteers went to Ed White elementary school tutoring students who were 5th grade and under, mainly 3rd graders. Tutor subjects include math and reading. Students were given sheets of paper as their target to complete during tutorial. Volunteers were divided into groups: several volunteers followed the students to their classroom and the rest volunteers worked with students in the cafeteria. The tutorial on math focused on steps to find the area of basic regular and irregular polygons. Volunteers showed examples on how to solve the type of problems and taught the students the best way to do questions based on their understanding. Volunteers who were assigned into reading groups led the students on finding their text evidence and exclude the incorrect options to find the final answer. Students worked on math/reading from 9 to 11:30 am and switch groups from 10:30 to 12. Volunteer tutor event last three hours from 9 am to 12 noon plus an hour commute time.
