On Wednesday, March 16, 10 volunteers went to Ed White Elementary School to help tutor kids in STAAR Reading and Math for grades 1-5. They went through reading passages, math concepts and questions, and other supplementary activities to help the children from 9 am to 2 pm. Starting at 11 am, the children and volunteers went out for lunch, with the lunchtimes split apart so they could fit all the grades in the cafeteria. This meant that lower grades had lunch at 11 am, while higher grades had lunch at 11:30 am. Therefore, the volunteers also didn’t have a collective lunchtime, since they went when their classrooms also went. After the children returned from recess, the volunteers also returned to their duties until 2 pm. The volunteers enjoyed bonding with the children over sharing knowledge and practice, and the children learned a lot from the experience.
Volunteers (6 hours, including travel time): Elizabeth Hu, Alex Sun, William Sun, Wendy Yin, Jiaqi Ren, Callie Meng, Jonathan Niu, Matthew Niu, Ray Huang, Jordan Zheng, and Winnie Jiang.
