East Cobb Branch August 2021 Youth Tutoring Report

In the month of August 2021, the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS held online youth tutoring activities as well as a few in person tutoring activities in light of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. All online tutoring activities are one-on-one and use Skype, Zoom, Facetime, and similar methods to communicate.

We’ve changed our original tutoring program as libraries have closed due to the pandemic, and meeting students in person at the library is no longer viable. As students need arguably more help during this period of school closures, we are giving kids in our area an opportunity to receive help. The interaction between tutors and students also makes learning more enjoyable.

Faith Huang tutored a 6th grade student in piano. Faith helped the rising 6th grade student with daily piano practice. A few times every week, Faith and the student would do a facetime call where Faith helped watch over the student’s piano practice, especially since the student will be having a piano competition soon. Faith would always give words of encouragement and give advice if needed. Faith and the 6th grade student have become comfortable with each other through the constant interaction, and the student is really glad to be able to have someone motivate and help with her practice.

Brian Kuang tutored two elementary school students reading comprehension. The student prepared two workbooks, which they would work through together. Each session lasted around an hour.

Jack Xu taught two middle school kids in a variety of subjects, including math, reading and language arts. Through tutoring, they were greatly able to improve their skills at their respective subjects. Jack feels very happy to see his students improve. One of the students shared his recent quiz score with Jack. It showed great progress.

Jay Pan spent a combined 10 hours tutoring Chinese students with the use of WeChat.
The Chinese students were taught English based on their current understanding of the language. A total of three Chinese students were tutored throughout the month of August. The three students consisted of a fifth, sixth, and seventh grader. The fifth grader was taught basic English vocab and grammar, and the tutor would spend most of the session going over their textbooks and reviewing vocab words to make sure they understood what the words meant, how to pronounce them, and how to use them in a sentence. The sixth and seventh graders finished school recently, so their study of words and grammar was continued. Some days, short picture books were used to teach the students basic grammar and words as well.
Tutoring these three students was very fun, and the best part was when the students had improved their English over time.
