Palm Beach AYLUS transcribes historical documents in August 2021

In August of 2021, the Palm Beach AYLUS branch volunteered virtually with the Smithsonian Museum to transcribe historical documents.

The project’s goal was to contribute to enhancing the experience of those who visit the Smithsonian by making it easier for them to read these primary sources. Along with this, we wanted to educate ourselves more about certain topics by thinking deeply about the first-hand sources.

We first had to read a guide on the specific format and symbols to follow when transcribing. Then, we picked between transcribing pages from scratch and reviewing previously transcribed ones. 1 hour was given for each page reviewed, and 3 hours were given for each page transcribed.

Participants:

Carina Wang- 6 hours, transcribed 2 documents

Claire Zhao- 3 hours, transcribed 1 document
