On 8/18/2021, members of the Syosset AYLUS branch (Aika Suizu and John Thach) taught a sixty-minute Japanese class to multiple high school students, each with differing degrees of proficiency and familiarity with the Japanese language and culture. The establishment of this class seeks to permeate the interest and knowledge in Japanese culture and language throughout society.
Starting the class, the Japanese class started with Sushi – themed Japanese vocabulary.
Transportation – themed Japanese vocabulary was also introduced such as トラック, 電車, and 船. Students reviewed and repeated each vocab for comprehension.
The main focus of the class was learning about adjectives and their usage in the Japanese language.
First, Adjective vocab was introduced in hiragana and kanji. Students were encouraged to group them based on their type. Adjectives regarding size, length and speed were categorized. Students then repeated a list of common adjectives used in everyday life such as はやい and おそい. Next students watched a video involving adjectives and their usage in sentences. Students practiced grammar involving adjectives for comprehension.
Lastly, teachers covered い and な adjectives. い and な adjectives contain distinctive grammar and conjugation rules. Students received hands-on learning where they practiced writing Japanese adjectives in present and past form. Teachers then went over and made corrections.
The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: Aika Suizu (1.5 hour) and John Thach (1.5 hour).
