Throughout July and August of 2021, AYLUS continued offering two-hour chess lessons to eager students. As with before, two long-time chess players Aaron and Baron led 6-8 elementary and middle school students who joined the Zoom meeting every Sunday from 4:30-6:30. During the first hour, Aaron and Baron gave the students instruction through prepared lectures, illustrative examples, and fun challenges. They worked to make the lessons more entertaining rather than purely informative, but still clear enough so that the students could apply the skills to practice games. During the second hour, the students would participate in an online tournament (set up by Aaron and Baron) in which they could demonstrate their skills, battle their friends, and ultimately play the game without pressure. The Summer 2021 chess lessons ended on August 8th, during which the instructors connected with the students one last time with a chess lesson filled with puzzles and fun. This summer, despite the continued pandemic, the students were able to gain knowledge about the endless wonders of a strategic board game and continue onward, whether to only play for fun or finally beat their dad in a game of chess.
