AYLUS Syosset NY Branch offered an English tutoring session (8/15/2021, #48)

On 8/15/2021, members of the Syosset AYLUS (John Thach, Leo Cheng, Ryan Leung, Aika Siuzu and Jasmine Chen) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.

In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan, Greene and Aika), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John, Jasmine).

Tutor Leo Cheng started lesson 6, introduced contrastive stress, and practiced descriptions. Contrastive stress was practiced by seeing how the stress on a word in a question would effect the reply. Then, roleplays were enacted which had the students think up of words on the spot. Lastly, because there was more time, a topic of the student’s choosing was brought up to practice conversation.

For grammar, Ryan and Aika went over infinitives, gerunds and conjugations (simple conjugations using verbs such as to read or to write). The main topic of their lesson was technology. Students were taught various vocabulary words regarding this topic (computer, phone, tablet, etc.) and then they were taught how to make sentences using the grammar lesson and the main topic. The class was then finished off with a short reading dialogue between students and questions were answered for comprehension.

Student tutors John Thach and Jasmine Chen taught the advanced class of AYLUS Syosset’s online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, a vocabulary list regarding relationships was introduced and taught, covering various words such as “divorce” and concepts such as the difference between familial bonds and friendship bonds. Also during this class, various emotional songs chosen from a specific pool of English language music were played and the students were asked to derive a meaning from those songs, which is related back to the relationships based vocabulary. Some of these songs consisted of tracks from movies and playlists from various singers like Conan Gray. Lastly, the students watched a few recipe and science videos from the Youtuber Adam Ragusea and later were prompted to discuss the topics and methods shown in the videos.

The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: Aika Siuzu (1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Jasmine Chen(1.5 hours), John Thach (1.5 hours), and Ryan Leung (1.5 hours).
