Beginning on June 6th, AYLUS began offering chess lessons to kids who wanted to learn more about and improve in the strategic game of chess. During these lessons, two advanced chess players, Aaron and Baron, divulged their knowledge on strategies, ideas to win, and their passion for the game to their students. Around 6-8 elementary and middle school students joined the call every Sunday from 4:30-6:30 to learn from their teachers. During the first hour, Aaron and Baron gave a prepared lecture on an important aspect of the game that would build upon each preceding week’s ideas to make the students more well-rounded players. During the second hour, the students would take a short break while the teachers set up an online tournament. Afterwards, the students would use their knowledge from the day’s lesson and their overall skill to compete against their fellow students in the tournament, allowing for students to gain hands-on experience and practice even in the midst of a pandemic. The lessons will continue throughout the rest of the summer into August. During a pandemic filled year when remote learning became the normal, the chess lessons from AYLUS allowed the students to be themselves and learn while laughing with their fellow classmates and having fun.
