East Cobb Branch Holds Summer Camps Session IV (6/28-7/4)

Every day from June 28 to July 3, Albert Zhang from the East Cobb Branch participated in the Summer Camp Program and taught for 10.5 hours.

This program was initially started in summer of 2020 due to the cancellation of summer camps caused by COVID-19. AYLUS has decided to bring it back again this year. Its goal is to provide entertainment and teach different skills to children who may be bored at home or want to learn something new. The volunteer or volunteers may teach 1-on-1 or in groups no more than 5. By teaching these kids, we want to help them have fun and relieve some burden from their parents.

Activities that are offered include tennis, basketball, soccer, cooking, drawing, piano, violin, dancing, and more.

Albert Zhang contributed by teaching 2 kids piano and 4 kids drawing.

Using Zoom, I taught 2 kids in each session. Piano sessions were smooth and successful, and the kids progressed quickly through their pieces. I taught them by giving a few suggestions and tips after they played a piece. I would also play the whole piece so that they can familiarize themselves with the song. The issues were unstable connections and soft volumes, which slightly hindered our communication. Besides piano, drawing sessions were also smooth and fun. I taught them how to draw animals and things that they wanted to learn using basic techniques such as sketching lightly. Along the way, I briefly introduced color theory and explained how they can mix some colors together. At the end of class, I gave them simple drawing challenges, setting a timer to add excitement. The kids were focused and obedient, which also motivated me to work harder. The only issue was Zoom’s 40 minutes time limit for meetings with 3 or more people (free version). It disrupted class, but we were still able to reconnect and continue.
