In June 2021, AYLUS Pearland started to offer free summer reading lessons. By using resources from Reading A-Z, 8 AYLUS Pearland volunteers were able to help more than 20 students ranging from first to fifth grade. In addition to using the given materials, the volunteers prepared their own lesson plans before class to help the students improve their reading, writing, and verbal skills. Furthermore, the volunteers also formulated their own writing prompts and created English-related activities to engage the students while simultaneously creating a fun and lighthearted atmosphere. The grade 1-3 classes are hosted on Sundays from 7-8pm, and the grade 4-5 classes are hosted on Mondays 7-8pm. There were 8 total lessons in June (6/6/2021, 6/7/2021, 6/13/2021, 6/14/2021, 6/20/2021, 6/21/2021, 6/27/2021, 6/28/2021) along with a training session for the volunteers (6/6/2021). The volunteers used this opportunity to help younger students, and the students immensely benefited from this opportunity by improving their English skills. Overall, the classes were very successful, and they will continue throughout the rest of summer!
