On 2/7/2021, six members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Jasmine Chen, Alan Huang, Emily Lin, and Greene Xue) taught a ninety-minute English class to new immigrants with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan and Greene), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John and Jasmine). There was an all time student count of 19. Also, Around 15 minutes before class ended, Alan Huang presented a blooket about conjugations with students of all levels. Lastly, because tutor Ryan Leung could not attend, Alan Huang was assigned to take Ryan’s place for the week.
Reading tutors Emily Lin and Leo Cheng finished Unit 4: Have you ever tried it? The lesson described different methods of cooking food. Afterwards, they went over the Progress Check for Units 3 and 4. They spent a lot of time teaching sequence adverbs.
For the level 1 class, Alan Huang and Greene Xue taught a lesson centered around sports and exercise. Students started with brainstorming about sports they had prior knowledge on. After, they watched a video on how people in America stay in shape and answered comprehension questions based on the video. Role play was acted out using a prewritten script, which other students answered questions about. An extensive grammar lesson was taught, including conjugations on present and past tense of regular and common irregular verbs, adverbs of frequency, and construction of questions using “how…?” , complete with practice on the newly taught concepts. Students then extended their knowledge of sports with a reading about different sports from around the world, such as capoeira, hurling, and banshi. Class ended with a game that was played on the website blooket with all of the other classes, practicing their present and past tense conjugations.
Student tutors Jasmine Chen and John Thach taught the advanced class of AYLUS Syosset’s 26th online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, the tutors continued working out of the new Interchange ESL textbook. Students were led through chapter 4 of the textbook, which focused on media and breaking news. Students were then led through storytelling exercises and were given a preview assignment for next week’s class.
