On 11/15/2020, four members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung and Emily Lin) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
The lesson consisted of two parts: Reading and Writing. Something different was that there were two new students and that Jasmine Chen and Alan Huang were not present.
Reading tutors Emily Lin and Leo Cheng started off by presenting and analyzing the joke of the week. Afterwards, a YouTube video narrating “The Egg” was shown which was based on the passage presented during the previous class. Lastly, a pattern recognition game was played called the Coffee & Tea game.
Today in writing class, we taught the students about different types of stories(non-fiction, novels, plays, epics, etc.) We then went over how to create their own novel characters. Details such as their physical properties, motivations for what they want to do, personality, strengths and weaknesses are all things to include in a character. Then we went on how to make a plot of the story, every story needs a conflict, background, climax and resolution in order to be complete. We then showed the students various interesting pictures and had them make up a story about what they thought was happening in the picture. After that we went over a vocabulary list with the students explicitly focused on the various types of nuts.
The following 4 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Ryan Leung (1.5 hours), Emily Lin(1.5 hours).
