On 11/1/2020, four members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung and Alan Huang) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
The lesson consisted of two parts: reading and writing. This time, Jasmine and Emily weren’t here due to personal reasons.
Reading tutor Leo Cheng first introduced and analyzed a joke. After that, the students continued on the SAT passage from the previous class. While reading the SAT passage, the students were told to summarize each paragraph while jotting down new vocabulary words. Then, a homework assignment of finishing up that passage was given.
Ryan Leung and John Thach taught the writing class. After introductions and going over the schedule, John established a new lesson in the “creative writing” unit, a change from the usual grammar unit. In this lesson, the basics of foundational creative writing were laid down and sources of inspiration were explored. This consisted of question asking, deep introspection, and various examples of how authors derive inspiration for their work. Afterwards, an exercise was conducted where different pictures were shown to the students without context, and the student was asked to make a story based off of how they interpreted the picture. Later, a series of pictures were displayed, and the student was supposed to link all of them together in a cohesive story. After the exercise, Ryan went over the vocabulary which centered around the political environment of the United States, where the students were asked to read the words aloud. John and Ryan jointly explained words which were unknown to the students and gave cultural insights to American life and politics. Lastly, a game was held by Ryan in which students were asked to read lists of different items and choose the object which did not fit the rest. The class was instructed entirely in English in order to immerse the students in an English environment.
At the end of the entire class, a game of Scribble.io was played to let the students practice English vocab and understanding.
The following 4 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours) and Ryan Leung (1.5 hours).
