Starting on Aug 8th, 2020, members of the Syosset Branch teamed with a biology professor in teaching scientific research to high school peers. The objective of the course series is to inspire and cultivate curiosity in participating students by introducing foundational concepts and procedures in scientific research, such as asking meaningful questions, gathering credible data and evidence, making logical conclusions and inferences, and communicating effectively.
On 8/29, which was the 4th meeting of the series “Scientific Research of EEB (Ecology and Environmental Biology)”, students and TAs were first asked to reveal the recent progress of their projects: air pollution before and during COVID-19 pandemic in metropolitan NY; mental health before and during COVID-19 pandemic between US and UK; marine biodiversity and biogeography–reginal comparisons of global issues. Then the reading and discussion of an article on scientific writing were carried out in breakout rooms led by TAs (Alan, Jasmine and Leo). Finally we watched a short video on Matter and Energy followed by a brief discussion.
The following students volunteered in today’s SREEB class: Alan Huang (2 hours), Jasmine Chen (2 hours), and Leo Cheng (2 hours).
