Phoenix Branch Archives Historical Documents August 22-28, 2020

From August 22nd to August 28th 2020, the Phoenix branch transcribed historical documents as part of the archivist volunteer program. Volunteers transcribed a total of  28 documents this week. 

 

Amy Xie transcribed 7 documents: Seabrook, NH -Regional Counsel’s Office [1 of 2] pg 124 , Pickwick Dam: Byrd – Higgins pg 906, pg 907, pg 909, Air Force Award Cards: Nelson, Laverne – Newmaker, John pg 889, pg 890, and pg 891. 

“The Seabrook regional Counsel’s Office was about the environmental impacts building a power plant would have in Seabrook. However, after considering the environmental impacts, officials decided that it was okay to build the power plant. I had fun transcribing this document as I learned about the long verification process to build something that has potential risks to the environment. This took me about half an hour to write out. The Pickwick documents were about a married couple who were not wise with their money and always had to borrow money from their relatives and friends. The relatives and friends grew tired of being used for money and sent complaints to the government to financially help out the married couple. These documents took me about an hour each because they were really long. Finally, the award cards took me 10 minutes in total.” 

 

Wenting Chen transcribed 5 documents: Williamson pg.14, pg. 15, Documentation from Case 5728 pg. 92, pg.93, and  pg. 90. 

“I did Documentation from Case 5728 pg. 92. I learned that they write crime stuff on cards.”

“I did Documentations from Case 5728 pg. 93. I learned that They also write letters on tiny cards.”

“I did Williamson pg.14. I learned that they have records of crime.”

“I did Williamson pg. 15. I learned that all these cards have the last name Williamson.”

“I did Documentation from Case 5728 pg. 90. I learned that they still write differently from us.Some of it makes no sense.”

 

Yongfeng Chen transcribed 10 documents: Agriculture Land Pg 89, pg 95, Agriculture Land [1 of 3] pg 104, Agriculture Land [1 of 3] pg 109, pg110, pg 112 Documentation from Case 5728 pg. 92, pg. 114, pg 118, and pg 119.

“I did agriculture land pg 89. I learned committees functioned under the direction of the State supervisor of Negro economics.”

“I did agriculture land pg 95. I learned that  Hon. T. W. Bickett was the governor of North Carolina.”

“I did agriculture land pg 104. I learned in Ohio on June 17,1918 they preceded the State conference.”

“I did agriculture land pg 109. I learned the Director of Negro Economics and with the State supervisor for the purpose of securing a location for prosperity.”

“I did Agricultural Land [1 of 3] pg 110. I learned  Discrimination in occupations on account of color was one of the conditions which, in some instances, confronted the Negro worker.”

“I did Agricultural Land [1 of 3]pg 112. I learned Negroes reared in Ohio, having the advantage of the public schools in the State.” 

“I did Agricultural Land [1 of 3] pg 114. I learned the work of the division was somewhat delayed in its beginning in Pennsylvania.”

“I did agriculture land pg 118 i  learned The project has continued with marked success.”

“I did agriculture land pg 119. I learned The members of the committee and of the executive board shall upon recommendation be appointed by the Secretary of Labor. “

 

Jiyu Wang transcribed 5 documents: Agriculture Land [1 of 3] , pg 96, pg 97, pg 98, pg 99, and  pg 100

“I transcribed Agricultural Land[1 or 3]: pages 96, 97, 98. The transcription process took me 2 hours.Summary: Page 96 talked about the different aspects of the company and where different committees are located within the State mentioned. Pages 97 and 98 described the working conditions and the benefits the plant offered to its workers.”

“I transcribed Agricultural Land[1 or 3]: pages 99 and 100. The transcription process took me 1 hour.

Summary: Page 99 talked about methods to keep the workers working. Page 100 discussed problems associated with African American labor, which included lumber camps, hosiery mills, and more.”

 

 

Annie Qin transcribed 6 documets:  [HRC Speeches 7/94-10/94]: [Reception for Van Cliburn at George Washington University 9/28] pg.1-6 (all)

 

“The document was on Hilary’s Clinton’s speech for pianist Van Cliburn’s reception. Cliburn was the winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, and Clinton expands on how his accomplishments have brought friendlier relations between the US and Russia. It took me approximately an hour to complete. “
