Phoenix Branch Archives Historical Documents August 8th- 14th, 2020

From August 8th- 14th 2020, the Phoenix branch transcribed historical documents as a part of the archivist volunteer program created in early July. This week, volunteers helped write out 15 documents consisting of both images and text.

Jack Xie transcribed The Director of Naval History Image 363.

“This document was about the disapproval of a submarine award plan by a Commander. This document took me 30 minutes to transcribe.”

Amy Xie transcribed 7 documents: Race 2D [Second] Draft [1] pg 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28.

“Transcribing each document took about an hour each, as they were very lengthy. These documents were about establishing an equal school environment, especially for minorities in the Unites States. The author argued that the key to maintaining a successful nation in the future begins with the younger  generation. However, many people in the young generation are exposed to a poor learning environment and the nation should invest in getting quality teachers, spend more money on schools, and teach parents (especially the minority parents) the importance of being involved in a child’s education and school. I found this really interesting, as this was written not too long ago, and I feel like what the document says could still be applied to our modern day.”

Yongfeng Chen transcribed 4 documents: Agriculture Land pg 66, 70, 71, and 73.

“I did agriculture land pg 60. I learned that there was rather an acute unemployment
situation in Chicago at the time.”

“I did agriculture land pg 71. I learned Dividends in a cooperative store are paid, not on the investment as in a privately owned concern.”

“I did agriculture land pg 73. I learned Duncan McDonald was the secretary-treasurer.”

Wenting Chen transcribed 3 documents: Documentation and Statements from Case 5728 pg. 153, Air Force Award Cards [Purple Heart]: Jablonski, Chester – Kenroy, Ronald pg. 701, and Factual issues pg. 52.

“I did Documentation and Statements from Case 5728 pg. 153. I learned that Henry Roan’s wife must be a victim because she knew who killed her husband.”

“I did Air Force Award Cards [Purple Heart]: Jablonski, Chester – Kenroy, Ronald pg. 701. I learned what their award card looks like.”

“I did Factual issues pg. 52. I learned that they had some trouble with the weathering issues.”
