Warren Branch Donates 3D-Printed Face Shields to Local Hospital

On June 17th, the AYLUS Warren Branch donated its first batch of 3D printed face shields.

While the pandemic has become less severe and businesses are reopening, there is still some need for face shields and PPE, especially among healthcare workers. People like dentists, who are beginning to make contact with people and do business again, will need PPE to protect themselves.

The AYLUS Warren Branch assembled a 3D printer and then experimented with different print settings and files. We had a few problems at the beginning, such as having to constantly re-level the bed and problems with the scaling of the print file. Eventually, we were able to fix these through trial-and-error, and started printing shields, with a rate of one high-quality headband every three hours. The branch donated its first batch of 32 high-quality face shields to the RWJ Steeplechase Cancer Center. Each face shield was constructed with a 3D-printed headband, a film, and an elastic band. We still have around 20 face shields that have minor cosmetic issues.

The Warren Branch reached out to a Patient Navigator from the cancer center, who requested the face shields. The branch plans on continuing to donate face shields, given that the need should still exist. We also plan on contacting other local businesses as well for smaller donations, as many of them don’t have as many workers as that of a hospital. Overall, the branch was very happy to help out.

Additionally, we would like to thank Cassie Wang and the Greater Princeton Branch for providing their advice and AYLUS T-shirts.
