On May 4 and 11, 2020, despite the COVID-19 outbreak, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) continued its ABC Chess program to help kids learn how to play chess by moving the program online.
GPA volunteer Sarah Yan was the Champion of 2017 NJ Open U1600, while Erick Yan was the Champion of 2016 Manhattan Open Mixed Doubles Team. They are teaching around 12 school-aged children how to play chess and various strategies used to win a game. Sarah and Erick taught various skills used to defeat one’s opponent in the complicated game of chess such as pins and forks. With the continuation of the online classes, we can help students who have the passion for learning chess, even during this hard time.
The COVID-19 is affecting everyone. As a result, ABC Chess is continuing their online chess classes. Every Monday, there are various positions and skills that the students always enjoy learning about such as opposition, and king pawn endgames. Teachers Sarah Yan and Erick Yan always enjoy helping to teach students and getting more people involved in the complicated game of chess. Even parents say that their kids are loving spending their free time learning a complicated yet brilliant board game.
Participants: Sarah Yan (May 4 & 11, 2020, 1.5 hours each), Erick Yan (May 4 & 11, 2020, 1.5 hours each).
