On November 3, 2019, as part of our ongoing “Conservation” project, Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA) supported Mercer County Park “Removing Invasive Plant” Event (MCP East Picnic Area, 1346 Edinburg Rd, Princeton Jct, NJ 08550) in the West Windsor Township, New Jersey.
GPA Conservation Team members and their parents participated in the event as a group. They wear long sleeves, pants, and shoes that can get wet. Gloves and tools were provided while some of the GPA members felt free to bring their own.
They gathered before 9 am at the Mercer County Park near its east entrance and met with the Mercer County Coordinator Alex Rivera, then headed out to the campground for the 2 hours conservation event.
GPA members used scissor-like tools to remove an invasive plant, Japanese Wisteria, from the campground area. Their widespread growth threatens the local woods, even killing them within years! Alex applied herbicide right afterwards on the roots to stop their continuous growing. By 11 am, work well done!
Participants (2 hours for all): Elizabeth Yunjue Li, Alice Hu, Fengqi Wen, Amy Zheng, Amber Yu, and Cassie Tammy Wang.
