20190427 East Cobb Branch Holds Youth Tutoring Program XXVII

On April 27, the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS held East Cobb Youth Tutoring program at East Cobb Library and Switzer Library.

The East Cobb Branch holds Youth Tutoring program every Saturday during school days, giving kids in the Cobb area an opportunity to receive help with their studies. The program gives students a comfortable environment to ask for help in academics. The interaction between tutors and students also makes learning more enjoyable.

A total of 3 students showed up, with 2 tutors to help the students at East Cobb Library.

This time, the tutors taught 3 students are elementary school student. The tutors worked on a variety of subjects with the students such as Math and Reading.

During this time period, students are preparing for their EOC’s. While at first, we expected that many more students would seek us out to help them, it looks like that is not the case and it is likely that during this time period we will not see many students who need help. During this tutoring session, 2 of the students came for review, and one needed help with review. It is likely that they have learned everything, and their teachers are now reviewing with them, filling the gap we had been.

This time, since students did not show up in the first half hour of the session, one tutor was called over to East Cobb Library to help manage the overflow of students in that location. The other member stayed to hold the session. Joseph, a returning student, came in with questions about standard multiplication of two-digit by two-digit. Since he did not bring is own worksheets, the tutor found practice problems on http://www.commoncoresheets.com/. Together, they went through the process of multiplying two-digit numbers.

Joseph was a very bright boy who picked up on concepts really fast. He was eager to try new strategies and was excited when he figured out how to apply them to the problems. During the session, he worked with an enthusiastic attitude and liked to tell stories about his improvements in math class.

Attendance: Cynthia Ruan (2 hours), Maxwell Jiang (2 hours), Rachel Li (2 hours)
