To commemorate Chinese New Year, East Cobb AYLUS members hosted a Chinese New Year celebration on February 9th at the East Cobb Library. The Chinese New Year is technically the 5th of February this year, but celebrations and festivities continue on for two weeks after its start. According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2019 is the year of the Pig.
Our presentation consisted of various performances, which were all germane to Chinese culture. We were fortunate enough to have members that are able to play traditional Chinese instruments, like the Guzheng (古筝), or Chinese Zither, and the Erhu(二胡), or Chinese violin. Other musical performances included the Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto (梁祝), Flowers and Youth (花儿与少年), singing, dancing, and other Chinese folk songs. After the performances, members set up stations that taught about Chinese culture. There was a display with information about Chinese New Year, stations for teaching people how to use chopsticks, Chinese Calligraphy, and some other activities.
All in all, the members were happy to show their culture and the people who attended left with a little more knowledge about Chinese Culture.
