Greater Princeton AYLUS Member Cathy Li Built a Strong Leadership to Better Serve the Community

Reported by Cassie Tammy Wang

Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA), NJ Branch member Cathy Li builds a strong leadership in and out of school. Because of Cathy’s volunteer services, more students in the area have become aware of the Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States and joined GPA to better serve the community.

Cathy Li had the honor of being elected both “Spirit Leader” and “Director of Fun” for the 2018-2019 fall and spring seasons for her “Ultimate Frisbee Team”. Volunteered as “Spirit Leader”, she has to keep both her team hype about the different tournaments that they go to and make sure that her team maintains a positive attitude towards our opponents. Additionally, she buys spirit gifts to members of the opposite team as a way of appreciating the opposing team’s skills and talents as well as creating song parodies about ultimate Frisbee for their team to sing to the opposite teams. As “Director of Fun”, Cathy is responsible for team bonding and making sure that everyone on her team feels supported and part of a family. Therefore, she organized a few bonding events. She had to first make sure who was available as a determination of a set date to host the event. She also had to contact different people to figure the location of where they should have the event. Most importantly, she had to organize different activities that her team members would be doing at each of these bonding events. Dates and hours that Cathy served: Aug. 25th, 2018 (4 hours), Sep. 21st, 2018 (4 hours),  Oct. 16th, 2018 (3 hours), Oct. 19th, 2018 (4 hours), Dec. 8th, 2018 (4 hours), and Dec. 26th, 2018 (4 hours).

Cathy Li volunteered as a leader in the Youth Leadership Development Program (YLDP). She had a lot of different responsibilities. For instance, spending time on Tuesdays to make agendas for the upcoming Friday classes. In the classroom, she not only presents different topics about public speaking, which includes adding humor into the speeches, adding voice variation, adding purposeful body language, etc., but also offers individual one-on-one advice to each of her students to make them better public speakers. Usually the classes consists of around 15 students, so it is quite difficult for her to remember every detail about what her students need to improve on. Therefore, she created documents where she records each student’s progress and create goals that she wants them to achieve by the end of the session. Dates and hours that Cathy served (with Certificates): Sep. 7th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Sep. 14th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Sep. 21st, 2018 (2.5 hours), Sep. 28th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Oct. 5th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Oct. 12th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Oct. 19th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Oct. 26th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Nov. 16th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Nov. 30th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Dec. 7th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Dec. 14th, 2018 (2.5 hours), Dec. 21st (2.5 hours), Jan. 4th, 2019 (2.5 hours), Jan. 11th, 2019 (2.5 hours), Jan. 18th, 2019 (2.5 hours).

Cathy volunteered as an editor of the newspaper PCS Voices to promote traditional culture. Her role was to organize the order of the articles submitted by students of all grades so that it fits into one page. The position also required Cathy to add pictures as a visual representation of what the authors were trying to convey as well as making the page look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Being the Associate Editor of PCS Voices, which apparently required more responsibility, she had to make sure that sentence structure in the articles ran smoothly without grammatical errors, and the editors did not make mistakes. Dates and hours that Cathy served (with published Newspapers): May 6th, 2018 (2 hours), June 10th, 2018 (2 hours), Sep. 9th, 2018 (2 hours), Sep. 23rd, 2018 (2 hours), Oct. 28th, 2018 (2 hours), Nov. 18th, 2018 (2 hours), and Dec. 9th, 2018 (2 hours). In addition, she authored an article on October 21st, 2018 (3 hours).

A Note from the GPA President Cassie Tammy Wang:

Congratulations to Cathy Li! Very impressed to see Cathy has achieved so much in both “School Leadership” and “Culture Promotion” projects that GPA has the focus on! GPA encourages its members to participate in any volunteer services of any scales: personal, team work, or GPA organized activities, and don’t forget to build up a team and finally become a strong Youth Leader!
