In this holiday season, Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA), NJ Branch remembers to embrace all in our community with joy and celebration, and therefore we launched a Year-Round “Humanistic Care” Project on December 8th, 2018. GPA member and one of the team leaders, Amber Yu, helped promote the “Humanistic Care” project in a “Pop-Star Holiday Cards” workshop at the Science Center of the Plainsboro Public Library on December 12th, 2018.
Event Summary Provided by Amber Yu:
Between 3:30 and 6:00 p.m., Amber joined two high-school volunteers in instructing younger students to cut and fold simple origami stars as well as how to operate an antique printing press churning out unique letterpress cards to glue the pop-up stars in.
The most difficult part was cutting and folding as the stars did not have an equal amount of points on one side and the instructions were printed as dashed or solid lines. A dozen families came, kids and all. They arrived eager to get out of the cold, but instead left with warm hearts and unique handmade holiday cards.
Through this fantastic volunteering experience, Amber felt that this event was a great opportunity to bring on the holiday cheer. As a volunteer, she brought her folding talent and holiday spirit and received smiles and laughter from children and parents.
The event also spread joy to those who couldn’t attend in the form of a beautiful handmade card. What’s more, it offered a unique blend of modernity and antiquity through a single holiday and encouraged community service and collaboration.
Way to go, Amber! GPA encourages its members to participate the “Humanistic Care” project in the coming years.
