On June 12&13, 2018, the East Cobb branch of AYLUS went and packed lunches for TWO hours at various locations of YMCA Summer Lunch Outreach program. The programs goal is to provide healthy meals to children that normally get food from school at a discounted price during school days, but not available in summer break. Volunteers would pack the lunches provided by the city government and talk/play with the children.
The participating AYLUS members greatly enjoyed volunteering and they played multiple games with the children along with giving them packed lunches. When the volunteers were packing lunches, they gave the children footballs, soccer balls, and bouncy balls to play with. This helped give them time to pack the lunches. As they have done the process before, they knew what to do and therefore quickly set up an assembly line to speed everything up. The lunches consisted of celery, broccoli, applesauce, ranch, a sandwich, and chocolate or white milk. The volunteers would give everyone a task and they would complete it. In no time, they packed 50 lunches.
Even though the day was hot and humid, the participating members played many games with the children, these games included four square, football, and many more games. This was all done after they were done packing lunches as to not disrupt the lunches. Overall, 46 lunches were served to the children.
